ELCA Deacon Holy Land Trip Together as ministers of word and service, we commit to being “grounded in a gathered community for ongoing diaconal formation”. You are invited to join faculty and students from Wartburg Theological Seminary in a pilgrimage to Greece and Turkey to visit sacred spaces of biblical significance and to encounter countries and people of rich and diverse cultural traditions today. Visit places where the Apostle Paul traveled as part of his ministry journeys. See and experience aspects of Orthodox Christianity in Greece and Islam in Turkey. In February of 2025, we will travel together on a 10-day pilgrimage to the Holy Land.  Our journey will begin with the Galilee region to the places where much of Jesus’ ministry took place and will continue to Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem.  We will end our journey in Jerusalem where Jesus was arrested, crucified, and resurrected.  Along the way, we will see many Old Testament sites as well.   Our tour operator, Elias Nawaweih, is a Palestinian Christian from Bethlehem. He has curated a pilgrimage that will not only help us experience the land, its history, and its archaeology but will also introduce us to the “Living Stones” of the Holy Land. Dan Overbo and the people of the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer as we walk where Paul walked.  See the ruins of the Philippi, Ephesus, and Corinth.  Renew your baptism at the river where Lydia, the first Gentile Woman was baptized by Paul.  We will climb Mars Hill where Paul defended the faith as he overlooked the Roman city of Athens.  Then we will board a boat to see the island of Patmos where the book of Revelation was written.  While we are there, of course we will see a few of the other Greek Islands to reflect and absorb all we have seen and done.  This pilgrimage will shape how the church was formed and help us cast a vision of what Jesus is doing in our church now.
