Reading biblical stories that relate to Egypt while looking at the pyramids or praying a psalm about the wilderness while looking off into the desert are powerful experiences. Egypt’s presence is always in the background of Scripture as THE empire, the embodiment of an economic system named after its signature site, against which the prophets thundered, a place of enslaved peoples making bricks with no straw; but also a place of surprising refuge, welcome, abundant hospitality, where leaders could be moved by love, forgiveness and humility, a context for birthing risky courage, and a liberation narrative that has changed the world. “Out of Egypt” God has called us all.

Whether you are dreaming about your first Camino, or are an experienced pilgrim, we would love to experience the Camino de Santiago with you! For centuries, people have believed that walking these pilgrim routes has brought them a sense of peace and enlightenment as they came away feeling God’s presence. We are both Camino rookies, but through a series of taps on our shoulders felt God calling us to lead a group of women on this journey. We have found an outstanding tour company that comes highly recommended by trusted seminary professors, and we are excited to see where God is leading us all on this journey together!
We will begin walking in Madrid and make our way to the Cathedral de Santiago in Galacia, located in northwestern Spain, hiking between 4-16 miles each day. We will be beautifully supported by guide and driver, spending our days hiking and our evenings dining together and in a 4 star hotel.
We are looking forward to this time set aside for reflection, for feeling God’s presence on our journey, and to walking, laughing, and being inspired alongside you!

I’m delighted to invite members and friends of Diamond Lake Lutheran Church in south Minneapolis to travel with me to Greece and Turkey to walk in the footsteps of the Apostle Paul and other leaders of the early church. The stories of the New Testament will come alive for us in new ways as we renew our baptismal promises in the very location of Lydia’s baptism, as we stand atop Mars Hill in the shadow of the Acropolis where Paul preached to the city of Athens, as we visit the Island of Patmos where John wrote the book of Revelation.
Paul wrote letters to the Corinthians – we’ll visit Corinth, where the extensive ruins indicate the importance of this city. He wrote a letter to the Ephesians – we’ll visit the ancient and sprawling city of Ephesus, with its breathtaking Celsus library. Paul wrote letters to the Thessalonians and the Philippians – we’ll visit Thessaloniki and Philippi, where Paul and Silas were thrown into prison.
And because we’re there already and because context matters, we’ll learn about the oracle of Delphi, we’ll visit the monasteries balanced impossibly atop the towering cliffs of Meteora, we’ll travel by sea to the islands of Crete and Mykonos and Rhodes and Santorini. We’ll draw on our understanding of Greek mythology as we stand in the ruins of massive stone arenas and alongside temples built by Greek gods. We’ll visit the Panathenaic Stadium, home to the first Olympic Games of modern times. We’ll do wine tastings and olive oil tastings; we’ll learn about how icons are made. We’ll eat more feta cheese than we ever thought possible.
We’ll learn more about ourselves, more about one another, and more about our own relationships to scripture.
